Mia Doi Todd - "Cosmic Ocean Ship" (2011)

I must thank Moonboots for putting me on to this. This sounds like it has been transported from 1974. Mia's voice is amazing, reminiscent of Joni, the sound is bossa-tinged folk pop, summery, mellow, underpinned by great production from Jonathan Wilson. A modern classic.

Thats the one.Smart.

My choice of today: -

Lauren Hill - The miseducation of
The keys - the fire inside. A really good band, mates with the bloke from Colorama.

Have to get hold of it: toss up between the one with "Miss Trudy" on and the one with the can of lemonade on the cover for me

Aviator ‘Huxley Pig Part 2’ - CD/DL085

Released: 2nd July 2012, Download & CD

'Huxley Pig Part 2' is the long awaited second album from Pete Wilkinson of the Liverpool bands Shack and Cast. This collection of songs reflects Pete's personal experiences over the last ten years, good and bad, real and imagined. Paul Hemmings (The La's and The Lightning Seeds) and Keith O'Neill (Cast) join Pete, to deliver the signature Aviator style. However, Pete has brought fresh energy to the sound with some new guest performers, notably John Head (Shack) who together with Pete brings a psychedelic sense of spontaneity. This album has a distinct colour and dimensions all of its own. Another classic release on the Viper label.

I've been listening to this since it dropped in my letterbox on Saturday. Nice Lennon/Beatley summery sound (amazing what the weather can do to your first perception of a record). First impressions good.

Oh, and congratulations to Pete on being the first to get their Shack-hiatus record released.

An advance copy eh? Nice one Matt, alright for some! I'm pretty sure this albums gonna soundtrack my own summer if it's as good as the first installment. I know the production wasn't everyone's cup of tea but I thought it was spot on and am hoping for more of the same on that score. Part 1 to me was pretty Harrison-esque with the chord progressions so if this has side stepped more towards Lennon then it'll do for me man.

Off to Milan in July for 10 days where I'll be catching the Roses, Reni being the main draw for me there. Then I'll be heading back home for another week to my old council estate stomping ground in Leeds to check out whose grayer, balder, fatter (or probably all three). I've no doubt this record will be getting hammered throughout. Hoping Milan will be decent as I've never been, I'd never even flown before until the day I emigrated to Canada! Can't be doing with air travel so with all the flights and layovers involved here I'm sure it'll be a nightmare/adventure in equal measures. What can you do. I'm guessing the wife'll like the shops in Milan if nowt else.

Was hoping Mick or John might be gigging by the time this rolls around but it'd seem I'm out of luck. Still, might take the missus on a day trip to the pool to have a nosey round anyway. I can always pop in the Brink for a brew, but if anyone has any other suggestions they'd be greatly appreciated as I've not been out that way since I was a kid.

"Remember lying in your attic on those summer nights
Our hands trembling side by side; well those were the best days of my whole life
And now I know you’re moving on and I’ve been trying too,
Been trying not to speak to you, but I still can’t sleep here without you to wish me a goodnight."
