Glasvegas will rise and fall quicker than you can shout Alan McGee. The whole greasy biker look is frankly ridiculous, the songs try to ape Spector / JAMC in a fairly unimaginative way, the lyrics attempt to be subversive but are just sentimental tosh, but by far and away the worst thing about them is the singer's voice. He must have heard that singing in a regional accent is the latest thing, but this guy makes The Proclaimers sound like Noel Coward. They have perhaps the worst name in musical history, and they are an embarassment to a scottish music scene that has produced so many fantastic bands. I am shocked that nobody else can recognise this.
I haven't heard a single thing from them but they're an NME band. Now, if I was in a band I wouldn't want to go anywhere near the NME whatsoever because the coverage is so arbitary. One minute they love everything about you then suddenly some other mediocre band turn up and you're swiftly forgotten. Basically if you want to do it your way, don't touch NME. While I can understand really young bands doing that sort of thing, the View being a prime example, because when you'rr a teenager, getting smashed every night I imagine you couldn't give a shit who you talk to. When you're as old as Glasvegas clearly are you don't have to dabble with the fickle fuckers. And they have. So I'm not interested.

Me too, and it's nothing to do with hype or the NME. I just like their music. Liked them the first time I heard 'Daddy's Gone'. I'd be a prick if I just turned away from something I like just because the NME happens to share my enthusiasm for it.

Rhys Ifans is one of my favourite actors but usually only gets mentioned in the same breath as Hugh Grant (sodding Notting Hill, crap film) or, more recently, Sienna Miller. The Peth are a bit shit but I don't think they were expecting all the publicity or for them to be taken too seriously as a band. Journalists are turning up just to see if Rhys is singing about Sienna and Rhys has been hounded by the paps since being dumped - I've seen the footage of them following him and goading him until he was in tears. When he was dating Miller all they wrote about was how he was clearly too ugly and scruffy to deserve her. I used to spend a lot of time in Wales and I know a few people who know Rhys, they've all said he's a top bloke with a great sense of humour.

Paddy Considine has a crap band too.

My conclusion has been drawn from the following shallow observations:

He seems to always be in those crap magazines that Disnaé buys.

He came strutting on stage carrying a barrel of beer, which no one appeared to drink from. Barrels of ale are not props/accesories, they are a purely functional vessels from which you get pissed from.

I don't like his hair.

Fair enough. I wouldn't be arsed to go see him or Paddy singing. Any gossip on The National?

The National were fucking immense - it had been lashing down for 2 days, pure mudbath. They were blown away by the amount of people who had congregated toward them.

45 minute set comprising mostly of tracks from Boxer (which I haven't listened to as much as Alligator). Really good band to watch, a much more laid back warm sound than on record. I expected them to be distant and "cool" as these American types tend to be, but they were well up for playing, interacting with the crowd.

The main stage at Green man has no barrier at the front and a line of security, you can literally rest your chin on the stage, and they were buzzing of it all, and the passion of the crowd sticking it out in the rain.

The singer ended up jumping in the crowd during Mr November, which they played last, they had loads of fans there who the front man was hanging the mike to to sing along.

I'm even more impressed by them now, after seeing some personality within them as live performers.

Ace.

Hey Steg, each to their own, I tend to get wound up about by certain bands very easily, as Kev points out, it was a bit of a rant. Arf you're right - forget whether a band is hyped or not, my penchant for Vampire Weekend has attracted some stick and they've been on the front of the NME and all, that hasn't stopped me enjoying their music.

That's exactly what I thought after seeing them in Notts last year. Tremendous gig and great personalities too. They were absolutely dripping in sweat afterwards, totally shattered but more than happy to have a yap with the fans.

I wasn't suggesting anyone on here follows the orders of the NME (as one former housemate did, to the album, trilby with your Libertines album sir? Oh you have.) but the whole, hype them up, bash them down, backlash, backlash against the backlash, almost completely without any debate on the music, tires me, so I have avoided anything centrally hyped for years so I can avoid getting into arguments about music. Which hasn't worked. It has led me to ignore the odd decent band or find them very late but there's so much good stuff to find anyway it's not really a problem and it does wonders for the bank balance.

Oh yeah I know you weren't having a pop, I was just pointing out that I like Glasvegas (and, for that matter, MGMT, Buriel and others) in spite of their blanket coverage in the NME rather than because of it.

Greasy biker look - er, more late 50s rock'n'roll which is better than looking like the usual bunch of indie / Ian Brown meffs in my book
Spector / JAMC - sounds fucking boss that
Lyrics are sentimental tosh - bit of heart and soul never hurt anyone.
Singer's voice - the Glasgow accent should be heard more often in popular song
Name - the worst name in musical history is actually Blur

Bottom line is they've written a handful of superb songs so far and that's good enough for me.

Every single person I've spoken to says they were brilliant. Which would you recommend Alligator, Boxer or both? My 15 quid HMV voucher is heading to the National, unless anyone has any other suggestions (shocking or not).

I started with Sad Songs For Dirty Lovers. Then Alligator, then Boxer. Buy Alligator and Boxer, I'll send you a copy of Sad Songs if you want.
