everytime that i'm like, eh, whatever i'm over it, then i end up listening to something by shack and friends and it kills me.

"london town" today, man. he has such a purity to his voice. how is that even done??

i never think fuck it Im over it. Listen to lots and lots of new stuff but shack always get a play now and then. And quite a lot lately. As for London town, first song i learned on the guitar. I also do quite poor versions of a few other shack songs. As for the vocals i think he s never sounded so pure as on closer. That vocal gets me every time, its such a beautiful take.

A mate who only recently discovered the Pale Fountains can't quite get over how Mick went from a late teens 'voice just breaking but large vocal range' singer to the gruff thick scouse and slang that adorns the Shack albums... Obviously voice changes with age, and they were coming in on the crest of the New Romantic type 80s vibe so probably asked to poshen up for the recordings, but his voice has a great warmth to it around 'Waterpistol' and beyond... proper campfire/weary sea dog type vibes isnt it? Haha!

Amazing tune...

I agree. Mick's voice has "developed" fairly gradually. There was no sudden break as you can link it back with each preceeding album. But I think the biggest changes came from Zilch to Waterpistol to the Strands. A seven year period probably coinciding with many other changes in his life. It's still just a great voice: expressive, warm, earthy, real and even now when he reaches up to the top end it's imperfection works perfectly.

With my other limited musical loves, especially the various individuals of a band called Shack, what I know is that, if Mick never makes another record (old school me folks) I will die, with lugs which have been musically bewitched and completely satisfied with their intake of all thats superb on my journey to hell and damnation. x

I should add that also includes the 1st crying of my son, the rest was a bit tiresome like, to be honest.

just so you know, the vocal to London Town was recorded at Chapel Studios in Lincolnshire on a warm summers day with the doors to the studio open into the garden / outside countryside space. If you listen closely you can hear a car on a gravel path at the very end. I recall it was a lovely day and Mick had waited until late in the afternoon to do the vocal take, suitably lubricated. Beautiful.One of my all time favourites too.
