I got a Kindle and I work away alot so it is great having all my books on hand. However, with paper books I used to read one at a time and now I have so many on the go its doing my head in.

Great in one way - crap in another. oh well.

I still buy the 'old' paper variety though!

I was tempted by a Kindle, but fancied a tablet instead. However the price tag put me off - £600+ for an iPad is just fucking theft and cheeky theft at that - but when Blackberry started flogging their Playbook, I took the plunge. I've found it really convenient that you can just download what you want to read instantly and not having to have the light on to read in bed is a plus too. The thing that gets me though is that the price of the books is the same as if you'd bought the paper version. There's no discount for the fact that the fuckers haven't had to print, transport, store and insure the book before they deliver it to you - which also costs them nothing. If I thought for one second that this extra profit was being shared with the author or used to provide discounted books for education or in the third world, I'd pay the price with happiness, but the fact that I know that it's just yet another example of pure corporate greed just gets under my skin. I like the E-reader experience, but I'll continue to buy books just to deny the greedy bastards their extra profit whenever possible.

If they (electronic books) encourage people to read more than thats obviously a good thing - as long as the paper ones dont disappear altogether then I can live with that no problem.

Amen sister.

I finally gave in and started using an IPod a couple of years ago, but I was given it, I doubt I'd have ever got round to buying one. Phil is threatening to get a kindle. I've got the lawyer on speed dial.

Totally with you on phone Gordon... great for making calls and the odd text but don't see the point of all the other 'functions'...as for the porn Danny I cannae get off on a 2 inch screen lol.. Letters love them but they are a dying art maybe we should convert SHACKNET into a letter writing club and go off grid?
Oh and here's what passed me by, at 55 years old I discovered that there was only one spelling for 'present' i thought the one where gave someone something was spelt 'presant'... and look i'm a man who has a degree and reads three books a week. So if we do write letters watch out for my spelling.

Oh and I only discovered recently that tomorrow only has one 'm'.

ha ha - but I'd say in 10 years time the like of Waterstones will be a distant memory & it will be the second hand bookshops that survive for cheapskates like me.

I get most of my books from charity shops, the amenity centre donations area (or tip as I like to call it) or my Mum and I'm with the library too. I bought some new books last year cos my Uncle sent me a wad for my 40th and it was a treat to myself but I do like books that I know other people have already read.

couldent agree more, buying a brand new book is a treat (when the kids give me a voucher or whatever) but recycling is what its all about. Pass any book I dont want to keep either to a second hand place or a charity shop, then you feel justified in buying there as well.

we'll all have to succumb to the kindle eventually. i despise them and mp3 players but we'll have no choice. cos if no one buys books anymore there's no books to pass on to charity shops. not in my lifetime tho i hope. i mean shipley basically just has greggs, home bargains, farm foods and seventeen charity shops. take the books and records away........

These offshore tax avoidance efforts. Nice to hear Camerons Uriah Heep wringing of hands about Jimmy Carr ( who is as funny as a week in the jail in my opinion) Now what was that again David...........
